Two-Dimensional (2D) Barcode

Two dimensional barcodes store a large amount of information compared to traditional barcodes like Code 39 and Code 128. For example, a typical barcode will store about 12 letters or numbers; a 2D barcode at the same printing size can store an entire paragraph of information. 2D barcodes require a scanner that will specifically read 2D barcodes. The most popular 2D barcodes are PDF417(customs documents use this on international shipments), DataMatrix (UID for US Military and Government asset tracking use), and QRCode (heavily used in Asian countries for promotions and advertising - many cell phones re capable of decoding).
